Five Frugal Things 2/10/2017

Making sun tea . . .

Making lychee sun tea . . .

YaYu’s commented this week, “Mom, how can you pick five things? Everything we do is frugal!” I have to say it’s pretty wonderful when your teenager notices your efforts!

  1. Brett gets the blades for his razor from Harry’s.com; they’re a quality blade that costs less than the ones sold at Costco. Last month there was a problem with the shipping on his order, so he contacted them to ask where his blades were and they sent him an extra box for free.
  2. Last Saturday we had leftovers on the menu, and every single leftover was cleaned out of the refrigerator! YaYu made fried rice to use up all the little bits of vegetables that were hanging around. The most expensive food you buy is the food you throw out.
  3. Brett took the cans and bottles we had hanging out in the garage to the recycling center this week, and the refund of $2.42 went into our change/$1 bill jar.
  4. Instead of buying expensive bottled ice tea, I made a big pitcher of lychee sun tea.
  5. I checked to see if our library had some books I want to read available as eReader downloads. Not all were, but I now have several books waiting on my “later” shelf, to download for free when I’m ready.

What frugal wins did you have?

You did great! Yesterday was actually the first time in a while that I had to throw over a fit bit and bobs that didn’t get eaten. I haven’t had sun tea in so long, but love it! Maybe that should be next on my list when the weather improves.

Moving is stressful enough without worrying about finishing up all the bits and bobs in your refrigerator! Your list of frugal wins was very impressive anyway.

I made sun tea the other day when it was warm but it got cold again so I’ve only had one glass. Once summer starts though I drink it all the time, and making it in the sun is the fastest and cheapest way I know!

Your comment reminds me of what happened to us in 2010, the year we started to get rid of our debt. EVERYTHING went wrong that could go wrong that year, up to and including our dog dying at the end of the year. Hang in there – keep reminding yourself that you can only go up now!

Great job! I had to think to come up with five frugal wins this past week…(1) Made my own coffee drinks instead of buying (2) Watched a movie from my existing DVD collection – a re-run for me but I haven’t seen the movie for a while (3) Went to see a free public art exhibition. I took some pictures for my upcoming blog post (4) Did not go to any mall or store hence did not make any impulsive purchase (5) Had meals at home and did not waste any food.

If you’re having trouble coming up with frugal wins, it’s probably because everything you’re doing is frugal, and you don’t see them as anything special any more. Good job!

Kind of a struggle for me this week, too.
    1) Tried on a sweater I’ve been lusting after and didn’t like it, not to mention couldn’t figure out where I would wear it now that I’m retired. So didn’t buy — regardless of the sale coupon in my purse.
    2) Borrowed two cookbooks from our library for new recipes instead of purchasing first and regretting it later.
    3) Decided to use multiple trial bottles of face cleanser I’ve accumulated this year instead of buying one large new one.
    4) Ditto body lotions. How did I get this many???
    5) Agreed with hubby that we don’t need Valentine gifts again this year. And we’ll make a nice dinner at home. V’s Day dinner out is frantic anyway.
