A little brag time . . .
Our daughter Meiling was approached right before her graduation last year, and asked if she would be interested in creating the art work for a deck of cards that a small business would be offering through Kickstarter. She agreed, and after some thought and discussion it was decided that she would go with a gothic theme inspired by the Edgar Allen Poe story, The Cask of Amontillado. She was given complete creative control over the art.
It was a big undertaking for an 18 year-old, and the project took her nearly five months to complete. She did 52 unique drawings for the front of each card, four jokers (two of which were bonus items), and the back of the deck.
The project’s goal was to raise $2,000; that amount was pledged in less than 48 hours. By the campaign’s end $7,060 had been pledged, with just under 500 decks ordered. Meiling’s original drawings, which were included as a bonus in some packages or for individual sale, proved very popular as well. Meiling still doesn’t know exactly how much she will receive for her efforts, but it will be a nice amount to put toward college costs.
